Femi Otedola’s daughter, DJ Cuppy begs Davido for recording deal

Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, 27, known as DJ Cuppy and daughter of Nigerian business mogul, Femi Otedola, has begged Davido, the Nigerian popular music superstar, to sign her to his label, DMW (Davido Music World).

This was following an Instagram post Tuesday, September 6, 2020 in which Davido announced the unveiling of Liya as the 1st lady to be signed on the music label, 24 hours after he terminated his record label’s contract with Lil Frosh.

“Welcome officially to the party DMW. 1st lady @yes Liya from here its onwards and upwards! On this day, I make this promise to you, Imma make you a global star,” Davido had written.

But DJ Cuppy immediately reacted to Davido’s post with “Sign me,” of which entertainment journalists have interpreted as “begging Davido to sign her”. Davido is yet to respond to her request.

One analyst wondered why DJ Cuppy whose father, Femi Otedola, has all the money needed to record and promote whatever work or idea Cuppy may have, would go a begging for a recording deal.

Another entertainment pundit puts Cuppy’s response in proper perspective: “It shows she is humble and has a good understanding of how the creative industry works: Money alone does not make an artist a star. Artists, first and foremost, need to have incontrovertible talents which renowned labels see and then sign up the artist. Self-publishing, no matter how much money and resources that may be available to the artist, does not make a star out of an artist.

“So, as an artist, you need other people’s recognition of your talents and their willingness to invest their hard-earned money in you. That’s what shows you have something worthwhile. Money can, and does buy media hypes and publicity for artists, but it hardly buys the talent needed for real stardom.”

DJ Cuppy grew up in Lagos, Nigeria and moved to London at the age of 13. She lived in Ilupeju, Lagos for six years before she moved to Ikeja where she attended Grange School, Ikeja. She later moved to London for her GCSEs and A-Levels and graduated from King’s College London in July 2014 with a degree in business and economics. She also has a Master’s degree in Music Business from New York University in 2015.

Cuppy does not hide her relationship and dating life. She has dated some celebrities in Nigeria entertainment industry and sports such as Nigerian footballer, Victor Anichebe which ended in 2017.

She has also had a relationship with Nigerian singer, Sean Tizzle.  In 2018, Cuppy ended a relationship with CEO of Stargaze entertainment, Asa Asika. Those knowledgeable enough about the relationship say Asika and Cuppy had known each long before Cuppy became a disc jockey.

On April 14, 2020, DJ Cuppy announced on her Twitter handle that she had become a vegan. Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet – a philosophy of life that rejects the commodity status of animals.

In September, 2020, DJ Cuppy received a brand-new Ferrari Portofino alongside her other sisters as gift from her father, Femi Otedola. The value of the exotic car was put around $243,000 (approximately 93 million naira).
